Strengths and Challenges

My strengths as a writer would be describing a scene or adding vivid details to a scene. I try my hardest to describe a scene by adding details, that would make you feel that you are there. I try to add details where you can imagine what you see, think, smell, taste, touch, and much more. I believe I have developed this strength over time, and especially flourished in being better this year. An example of great details used would be in the papers I wrote this year: personal narrative, literary analysis, and the research paper. Such as, in my research paper, I added details about what Queen Hatshepsut would have worn and why, the details I added to the paper, could make you well aware of  how the Queen looked like.      The challenges that I have faced and still need to work on is my grammar. I have always had a problem with enhancing my word choices, comma splits and having a passive voice misuse. I try to work on these issues when I am writing....

Hits and Misses

There were many hits and misses throughout this year. Throughout the year I have become a stronger writer and I have developed many skills in writing and in analyzing writings in books or poems. I believe that my personal narrative was a piece of writing that I was successful in. I enjoyed writing the personal narrative because the event that I wrote about changed the way I am, and made me more appreciative of my surroundings. I believe the successful part of my narrative was the details I included in there. The details in my paper were well described, such as, where I personified a tree dancing in the wind. The details in my paper was a significant part because it brought out the importance of nature to me.       Though my least favorite unit I struggled with was the poetry unit. I do like poetry, but I simply cannot write any exciting or meaningful poems in general. I found it stressful when were had to write each day for five minutes a poem ...

#399 How has traveling affected you?

Traveling is something that my family has been doing for the longest time. Before my brother and I were born, my parents would travel the world and go to many places, and as we both were born we got to do the same. Every summer vacation we always go somewhere new, somewhere different. There has never been a summer vacation where we haven't traveled outside the country. Traveling is a worthwhile experience, which everyone should try.  My parents take us to many places because they want us to be cultivated in other people's cultures. They also take us traveling to learn how to respect one's culture. In a world where diversity is big, it should be considered to know and respect people's culture.      Now the big question, how has traveling affected me? Traveling has affected me in many ways, physically and mentally. It has affected me in an emotionally way, for an example, is when I went to India and saw the environment of a family. An environment,...

Purple Hibiscus Reading Response

From the last reading response to this one, a lot has changed in Purple Hibiscus. New characters were revealed and dramatic scenes have happened. What I found interesting in the book so far, and would like to contrast is the difference between Amaka and kambili. Both girls are at the same age, though act very much different. Amaka is free-spoken and passionate about her beliefs. An example of this would be on page 169 to 170 when Aunty Ifeoma said: "Kambili, I want you to help me do the orah leaves, so I can start the soup when I come back," she said. "Orah leaves?" I asked, swallowing. "Yes. Don't you know how to prepare orah?" (...) "No Aunty." "Amaka will do it then," Aunty Ifeoma said. (...) "Why?" Amaka burst out. "Because rich people do not prepare orah in their house? Won't she participate in eating the orah soup?" This example shows the Amaka is intolerant of rich people and believes that Kambil...

Title: Birth Control Apps Find A Big Market in 'Contraception Deserts' By: Lesley McClurg and Ashley Lopez for NPR      The NPR article is about an online birth control app called, NURX, that allows women to order their birth control, without consulting with their doctors. Rachel Raph is a customer of the company and explained to us how the process works. The first step would be to answer a questionnaire. According to a nurse practitioner of NURX, the patient would discuss their medical history online to the practitioner. After discussing and answering the questions, a clinician would look at the results, and "makes a suggestion about what type of hormonal contraception might be best for that individual." Then the pill would be delivered to them free of charge if they have an health insurance or would have to pay fifteen dollars for the month supply. Many people who live in small towns are very much grateful for NURX or birth control apps in general. Claire H...

Beach Day The waves pushed harder and harder against the wind. The two seagulls were pinned, to each as they flew. The sand blew across the deserted beach. I laid on the sand and ate the sweet and sour peach. I could smell the salty yet fresh ocean, I began to smile as the emotions In me were filled with happiness. Everything about it made me happy, Everything about it made me relaxed. For the beach was the best thing to have. End Rhyme, Anaphora, consonance, assonance, and alliteration

Reading Response to Purple Hibiscus

The Purple Hibiscus is a great book so far. What I find interesting in this book, is the vivid details used to portray a scene in the book. For example, on page thirty-three, it says "We cleaned up the trickle of blood, which trailed away as if someone had carried a leaking jar of red watercolor all the way downstairs. Jaja scrubbed while I wiped." The vivid details used in this scene portrays when Kambili and Jaja had to clean mama's blood when she got another miscarriage. The details in the scene show how emotionless the brother and sister are since they are used to cleaning up the mother's blood after the father had beaten her up.      Another scene that has great details as well as on page forty is "Who came first?" Papa asked, finally. "Chinwe Jideze. "Jideze? The girl who came second last term?" "Yes," I said. My stomach was making sounds, hollow rumbling sounds that seemed too loud, that would not stop even when I sucked...

Tanya- Tree Poem Ellie S.  Oh rain, why did you go?

Poem

The other team had already won. I was standing getting ready to run, I was staring at the finish line, hundred meters ahead, I felt the warm sun rays stinging on the back of my shoulder, I felt the wind as the breeze blew, I could hear the crowd holler. I could hear my team chant. I heard the starter say "on your marks," And, that's when I knew I needed to start, And, run as fast as I can. End Rhyme, Alliteration, and consonance

Song Analyze

The song that I will be analyzing is "Umbrella" by Rihanna and Jay-Z. In the song there are techniques that are used, to make the song purposeful. At the beginning of the song there was few of consonance's used, such as in lines thirteen where it goes-"In anticipation for precipitation." The repetition of "action" makes this a consonance. Also, in the beginning, assonance's were used, such as in lines seven where is goes- "Coming down with the Dow Jones." The repetition of "ow" makes this an assonance's. Another technique used was onomatopoeia, an example is in lines one through four where it goes"uh huh" imitates the sound. Hyperbole was even used in the poem, such as in lines thirty-eight, where it goes "you're part of my entity, here for infinity." This phrase uses the exaggeration of being alive for forever. Throughout the poem, lots of rhyme was used such as end rhyme and even a rhyme scheme...

Free Post

On Sunday was my fifteenth birthday. Though before that, on Saturday, I had a couple of my friends over for a birthday dinner. It was really fun and I had a great time. On the morning of my birthday, I was really happy because the weather was perfect. My whole day was spent in the warm yet breezy weather. As I spent my day outside, I played with my dog, Lucky, and even opened up my birthday gifts from my parents. I was very grateful for receiving such great gifts, such as- perfume, makeup, and chocolates!       After spending much of my day outside, I went to dinner with my family. Going to dinner with my family is great because we often do not go out to eat, or even eat at the same time when we are at home, due to my parents work. Though, going to dinner with my family really made me happier, as we caught up on more. I am really grateful for my family and friends, being there to celebrate my fifteenth birthday!

LAUNCH Response

LAUNCH day was an interesting experience that I got to see. Seeing all the presentations of different types of situations in our world was a great learning experience. Some presentations I liked were: "Re-thinking your health from Drugs to Diagnosis," "Think Again: Considering our World's Stress, Values, and Norms," and "Embracing the World Around You: Where Do You Fit In?" In these presentations, I not only enjoyed them but learned new ideas about our society. One particularity presentation, I very much enjoyed was Sue Munro, "Creating an Interconnected World: The Importance of Languages."      The reason why I liked this presentation was that of the main message Munro was expressing, which is the importance of learning new languages. The examples she gave in her presentation, helped described why learning languages are important. Learning a new language can help us in the future. An example of this that Munro used in her presentation ...

Research Paper: My Topic- Ellie S. Research Post- Grace S.

Research Post

My research topic is on Queen Hatshepsut achievements during her reign. Queen Hatshepsut was one of the seven women to rule Egypt as a female pharaoh. Queen Hatshepsut made Egyptian history impressive, by being the most successful female pharaoh to rule. She brought prosperity, peace, great art and great monuments to her kingdom. Though, what made her rule so successful were her building projects. Queen Hatshepsut built quite a few monuments such as the Karnak Temple and her remarkable mortuary temple. The mortuary temple called the Deir el-Bahri is her most famous building projects. The Deir el- Bahri contains major events that had happened during Hatshepsut life. One event that I find monumental is the Expedition to Punt. This expedition was ordered from Queen Hatshepsut. The main point of this expedition was for trading. The Egyptians had brought back many valuable goods to Egypt. This expedition also marked the first successful transportation of foreign fauna. Th...

Reading Response

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, is a very interesting book. In the beginning of the book, Junior and Rowdy's friendship was well known. Though when Junior had decided to leave the rez and go to another school, that friendship was gone. At Juniors new school he began, a new yet different friendship had sprouted with another boy, Gordy. What I realized while reading the book was how these two friends are majorly different. Rowdy's friendship with Junior, is a toxic yet strong friendship. Rowdy protects Junior from all the bullies on the rez. Though when Junior decided to leave to go to Reardan, the friendship became toxic. Rowdy became aggressive and even violent.       The friendship between Gordy and Junior is an encouraging one. What I meant by that is, Gordy encourages Junior to keep his hopes up by learning more. On Page 97, Junior stated: "Okay, so it's like each of these books is a mystery. Every book is a mystery. And if yo...
